In Memory of David Galinsky
David Galinsky died, at age 71, in an accident in Chapel Hill on January 25, 2006.
A committed scholar and educator, David gave four decades of dedicated service to the academic community at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
David earned his BA from Duke University and his PhD in Psychology from the University of Michigan in 1961. After spending several years on the faculty at Michigan, David joined the faculty at UNC as an Associate Professor of Psychology in 1965. He served as the Director of the Clinical Training Program from 1967 until his appointment as Chair of the Department, a role he had from 1983 through 1993.
His professional work was focused on the assessment of personality characteristics and the relationship to health conditions. He was an author of six books and numerous journal articles in this area. He was honored with the American Psychological Association Award for Distinguished Contribution to Knowledge in 1991 and with the Bruno Klopfer Distinguished Contribution Award from the Society for Personality Assessment in 1994. Another area of interest to him in earlier years at the university was research on achievement and ability in black and white students in what were then segregated schools. A book based on that work was awarded the Anisfield-Wolfe Award for Best Contribution to Race Relations of the Year (1968).
David retired in May of 1997 with over 32 years of service but he continued to be active in the Department teaching and supervising graduate students as well as playing a major role in the Department’s fundraising initiatives.
The Galinsky family requests that memorials for David be made to the David and Maeda Galinsky Graduate Fund, Department of Psychology, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3270.
