Leslie Berntsen, chair of the award committee, is thrilled to announce Dr. Viji Sathy as the recipient of the 2022 STP Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award. Dr. Sathy is an Associate Dean for Evaluation and Assessment and Professor of the Practice of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her teaching, public scholarship, and outreach focus on the teaching of statistics, inclusive pedagogy, and the role of assessment in fostering equitable educational outcomes.
Drawing on her training as a quantitative psychologist and her own life experiences, she helps her students learn the foundations of statistics and research methods, as well as un-learn any previously held misconceptions about their ability to be a “math person” or “science person.” Even years after taking her classes, students attest to the life-changing impact of her teaching approach, which she now shares with instructors across the country through invited workshops, keynote addresses, and academic and popular press publications as a nationally sought-after faculty developer. In recognition of her exemplary dedication to practicing and promoting inclusive pedagogy, STP is pleased to present Dr. Viji Sathy with the 2022 Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award.
